Keeping Kids Cool & Safe in Hot Summer Months

Summertime is one of the best parts of the year for kids. After all, they have a nice long vacation to relax and have fun. Something that is made even better when the sun is out and they can enjoy playing outdoors. Of course, as a parent, summer is also a time when you have to keep your kids as safe as possible.

Here is how to stay cool & safe even into the fall months.

Sunblock

When it comes to sunblock for kids, a high factor with UVA and UVB protection is always better. In fact, many parents choose to use a factor 50 SPF, something that will protect their children’s delicate skin and significantly reduce the risk of any damage. Of course, SPF creams needs to be reapplied during the day, as well as after they have been in the water as they do come off.

Although there are products that can be applied once and should stay on all day, as long as it doesn’t get wet. You will also find different SPF products to make applying sunscreen to your kids easier, such as ones that are colored so you can see what parts are done, and even wipes infused with sun cream for easy application on the go.

Protective clothing

Next, when it comes to keeping the kids cool and safe when the sun is beating down, protective clothing is a must. In particular, investing in a hat with a neck flap for when they are playing or walking around outside is a good idea.

It can also be a much better idea to go to sites like Cheeky Chickadee and get a full-body swimsuit. Then your little ones will be much better protected even if they are playing in the ocean, pool or even the backyard. This way they can stay out longer and still be safe. But don’t forget, SPF will still need to be applied to parts the suit doesn’t cover.

Cooling & hydration

Another essential way of keeping your kids safe in the sun this summer is ensuring that they stay hydrated. Of course, this means investing in a water bottle for the kids and getting them used to drinking lots of H2o rather than sugary drinks.

Additionally, you can enhance their cooling by getting products like a cooling scarf / towel online. This being a piece of cloth that you just have to wet and will stay cold for up to three hours. In fact, such items are great to take out on a day trip because they can be sealed up in a pouch and wrapped around your child’s neck to help keep them cool when touring historic site or theme parks.

Shade

Lastly, no matter how much your little one loves to be out in the sun, it is crucial to remember that you are the parent. Therefore it is you that needs to remind them to come into the shade for a while. In fact, by paying particular attention to this at the peak sunny time from 11am – 3pm every day, you will be able to keep your child safe and cool during the hot summer months.

Hope you are having a great summer so far!

  1. That shade is a good idea for us dads, too. I know I stand out in the sun for hours when I’m coaching, and really feel the effects of not hydrating well after all that. Good advice here!

    1. Thank you for pointing that out! Great idea and stay cool!
