How To Incorporate Photography In Your Home

Adding art of any kind to the walls of your home can help to bring it to life. But incorporating original photography is about as real as it gets. Photos can be used in a variety of different ways in your home – to evoke memories, add a splash of color or simply to improve the aesthetics. At least it does for me.

Let me show you how you can incorporate photography in your home.

The first thing to do when considering using photography is to plan the theme of each room you wish to display photos in. For example a children’s bedroom may have a safari theme, a bathroom may have a blue color theme and a kitchen a botanical theme. By scoping out a general theme for each room you can begin to source photographs that align with it, this will result in a more cohesive end result. Themes can be as simple as matching colors or more specific such as a particular event or landscape. Or simply your family portraits.

Next, you will want to set a budget. The great thing about photography is that it spans a wide range of price points. If your budget is tight then using photo printing Apps will allow you to print photos that you have taken yourself directly from your phone. If you have a little more to spend and a more professional look in mind then you can source photos from professional photographers. Remember to incorporate the cost of frames into your budget, and once again, you can either do the framing yourself or enlist the help of a professional if you prefer.

If it’s in your budget then the next thing you’ll want to do is to research photographers and artists that you may wish to purchase work from. Whether it’s buying bird photography for your home or commissioning a family portrait, it’s important to research the style and aesthetic of the photographer you are going to use. If you know nothing about photography then you may worry that understanding photography styles is a bit too much. But don’t fear, at its essence you are simply looking for photos you like the most. Create a board on Pinterest or start scrolling through Instagram’s photography hashtags to get a sense of what you do and don’t like in a picture and remember to make a note of photographers names. Once you have sourced a photographer you like, it’s time to make a purchase.

It can be hard to decide where to put your prints until you can see them side by side and all together. Layout your prints on the floor and experiment with different combinations and positions. Next, enlist the help of a friend to hold photos against the wall while you stand back to get a full view. Once you have decided where you wish to hang your new photographs, it’s time to fix them to the wall. You can do this with or without nails depending on whether you are able to make permanent damage to your walls.

That’s it! Stand back and enjoy your hard work. You have set a theme, researched styles and photographers, sourced or printed your pictures, framed and hung them on your walls. Now this visual addition to your home is yours to enjoy.

  1. This is awesome. We’ve nearly run out of wall space. I love the idea of a wall with a theme, like the one of trips you’ve taken.
