The Emotional Whiplash of Raising Teenagers
Some days I cry in the shower. Other days we sing, dance and go on coffee runs together.
The emotional whiplash of raising teenagers is real.
One minute, I’m mourning the little kid who used to reach for my hand without thinking. The next, I’m standing in awe of the person they’re becoming. Some days I’m convinced I’ve failed as a parent because of a slammed door, a short response, or a battle I didn’t handle perfectly. Other days, a random conversation in the car reminds me that maybe they’re listening more than I realize.
Raising teenagers is a constant tug-of-war between holding on and letting go. It’s watching them pull away while desperately hoping they always know where home is. It’s giving them more freedom while carrying more worry than ever before.
No one talks enough about the emotional contradictions. The pride and the fear. The joy and the grief. The laughter and the tears. The moments when you miss who they were while celebrating who they are becoming.
The truth is, both things can exist at the same time.
Some days I cry in the shower.
Other days we sing and dance and go on coffee runs.
And somehow, both are part of loving a teenager.
That is the emotional whiplash of motherhood. And if you’re living it too, you’re not alone. ❤️
