Bosnia & Herzegovina - your 2024 vacation destination

After 23 years in the United States, I finally went back home.

To Bosnia and Herzegovina, that is.

To preface this, I live in the Chicagoland area and have been since the mid 90s. This is my home. I have lived here most of my life and almost everything I am and have, is here. But I was born in the former Yugoslavia (Slovenia) and lived in Bosnia until I was 10 years old. At which point, the war in the Balkans forced us to flee. My childhood home was destroyed and we had to seek refuge in Slovenia and Germany until we finally settled in the United States. For more details on the war, please read here.

While I visited Bosnia in 2000, the recent trip with my family was a unique experience. It was my husband's first time back in 17 years, and our kids' first ever visit, making it especially memorable for all of us.

Now let me tell you what we did and what we would highly recommend on your first visit to Bosnia.

Our trip started off in the northwest part of Bosnia by Brčko, where my husband is from. It is covered with nature and rich in history. We chose the following monumental destinations to explore and learn more about: Gradačac Castle, Srebrenik Fortress and Tuzla.

Gradačac Castle

In the Middle Ages, Bosnia & Herzegovina was a powerful kingdom with many fortresses.

This is one of those historic fortress located above the city of Gradačac. It was built between 1765 and 1821 and has a watchtower that stands at 72 feet tall. The castle holds great historical significance as it played a role in freeing Bosnia from Ottoman occupation in 1831.

You can easily spend a few hours here, exploring and learning about the history. It has the most amazing walking trail and significant lookout points of the town and surrounding mountains and cities. You can also take a break at their restaurant and enjoy a traditional Bosnian coffee with a view.

Paid parking is available near the entrance (cash only) and the walk up the cobblestones is beautiful. There are souvenirs available for purchase here as well.

Srebrenik Fortress

The Srebrenik Fortress is an ancient and well-preserved castle near Tuzla City. It offers a stunning view and is a popular tourist spot.

The fortress was the birthplace of the first Bosnian king, Tvrtko I Kotromanić. It was strategically built on a mountain with narrow roads, making it difficult to conquer. The defenders used clever tactics to deter attacks. The castle offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The drive up is long with winding roads, tons of homes and very scenic.

Paid parking is available (cash only) close to the entrance. But be prepared to walk another half a mile to the castle on some pretty steep inclines and declines. There is a convenience store located by the parking lot (or before you make your drive up) where you can grab some water, you will need it. There is also a super small, family owned restaurant on the way to the fortress with some of the best views.

You will also pay to enter the fortress and there are souvenirs available for purchase. But please be very careful (very dangerous falls and no protection), wear comfortable shoes and take your time.

Tuzla

Tuzla is Bosnia's third largest city. And although we did not spend enough time in Tuzla or it's surrounding areas, I still wanted to add it to my list because of it's history.

Tuzla is a city in northeast Bosnia known for its economic, cultural, educational, health, and tourism significance. It is home to universities and a diverse industrial sector, with a growing service sector. The city features Europe's only salt lake, attracting over 350,000 visitors annually. Tuzla has a rich history dating back to the 9th century and became an important garrison town during the Ottoman Empire.

But perhaps even more important to note and visit it's site, is the Kapija.

The Tuzla massacre occurred on 25 May 1995, resulting in the deaths of 71 people and the injury of 200 others. A shell fired from Serb positions caused the tragedy, hitting a central street and its promenade. One of the victims was a two-year-old child.

Once we moved our way to the east side of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the city where I am from, Prijedor, we visited the following spectacular monuments: Banja Luka, Mrakovica and Una National Park.

Banja Luka

Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the Bosanska Krajina region. It is known for its beautiful nature, including tree-lined avenues, boulevards, gardens, and parks. Banja Luka was recognized as the European city of sport in 2018.

The city of Banja Luka offers a rich tapestry of historical and cultural landmarks that make it a must-visit destination. One of the iconic sites that captivates visitors is the Ferhadija Mosque, a breathtaking architectural marvel that holds significant importance in the city's heritage. Its intricate design and spiritual significance make it a place of reverence and a testament to the city's religious diversity.

The Kastel Fortress stands as a proud symbol of Banja Luka's resilient past, offering a glimpse into the city's medieval history. As visitors stroll through its ancient walls, they are transported to a bygone era, where the echoes of history reverberate through the passages and courtyards of this formidable structure.

The meandering Vrbas River, with its tranquil waters and scenic surroundings, adds a touch of natural splendor to the city. From leisurely boat rides to idyllic riverside walks, the Vrbas River provides a picturesque backdrop for unforgettable experiences and serene moments of reflection.

Nestled amidst the city's landscape, beautiful churches stand as testaments to Banja Luka's architectural and spiritual heritage. These timeless structures exude an aura of tranquility and grace, inviting all who visit to admire their intricate design and serene ambiance.

Finally, the vibrant city center serves as a hub of activity and a melting pot of culture, where locals and visitors converge to embrace the lively atmosphere and explore the myriad of shops, cafes, and cultural hotspots that define Banja Luka's charm.

Together, these must-visit places form an exquisite mosaic that showcases the allure and diversity of Banja Luka, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in its history, culture, and natural beauty.

Mrakovica, Kozara

Mrakovica, Kozara in Bosnia and Herzegovina is truly a hidden gem nestled on top of Kozara mountain. The stunning landscape of Mrakovica is characterized by rolling hills, lush forests, and breathtaking vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. This picturesque setting offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and avid hikers alike.

Apart from its natural beauty, Mrakovica is steeped in a rich and intense history that adds another layer of intrigue to this incredible location. The mountain of Kozara holds deep historical significance, bearing witness to various events that have shaped the area over the years. The echoes of the past can be felt as you traverse the landscape, adding a poignant and contemplative element to the overall experience.

Visitors to Mrakovica will find themselves immersed in a world that seamlessly blends the beauty of nature with the depth of historical legacy. Whether you're exploring the hiking trails that wind through the mountainous terrain or delving into the stories of its past, Mrakovica promises a journey that is as enriching as it is awe-inspiring. It's a place where the wonders of nature and the mysteries of history converge, leaving an indelible impression on all who venture to this captivating destination.

Strabacki Buk, Una National Park

Strbacki buk with its impressive height of 24.5 meters stands as the highest and most striking waterfall within the picturesque Una National Park. This natural wonder was shaped by tectonic movements and tuff deposits, resulting in a breathtaking sight for visitors. It's intriguing to note that at the onset of the twentieth century, the riverbanks were adorned with numerous watermills, offering a glimpse into the historical significance and utilization of the area. The combination of natural beauty and historical significance makes Strbacki buk a compelling destination for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

The terrain to get to Strabacki buk can be quite challenging, so it's important to be well-prepared for the journey. I would highly recommend either joining a tour group with an experienced guide who knows the area well or renting a super small car that can navigate the rugged terrain more easily. While the road may be tough to traverse, the final destination at Strabacki buk is truly worth the drive. The breathtaking natural beauty and the feeling of accomplishment upon arrival make the journey an unforgettable experience. Whether you choose to tackle the route with a guide or opt for a nimble vehicle, the stunning scenery and the awe-inspiring waterfall at the end make it all worthwhile.
