5 reminders for World Mental Health Day

October 10th is World Mental Health Day.

This day is aimed to raise awareness and mobilize support for global mental health issues.

We live in a fast-paced world where stress is common. While some thrive in constant movement, others need simplicity. It's vital to understand how we function best and to incorporate that into our daily lives. By following these practices and self-care tips, we can support our mental health.

Here are some reminders on how to best take care of yourself in time of need:

1. Prioritize Self-Care
Take time for activities nourishing your mind, body, and soul. This might include:

  • Meditation or deep breathing
  • Yoga or stretching
  • Reading or listening to calming music
  • A relaxing bath or spa treatment
  • A warm cup of tea or coffee

2. Set Boundaries
Give yourself permission to:

  • Say "no" to commitments
  • Take a break from social media
  • Ignore emails or texts
  • Disconnect from news and current events
  • Enjoy solitude or quiet time

3. Practice Self-Compassion
Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a close friend:

  • Be gentle with your thoughts and emotions
  • Avoid self-criticism
  • Focus on strengths, not weaknesses
  • Celebrate small accomplishments
  • Remind yourself: "I am enough"

4. Engage in Joyful Activities
Do things that bring you happiness and make you feel alive:

  • Creative pursuits (art, writing, music)
  • Outdoor activities (walking, hiking, gardening)
  • Cooking or baking
  • Playing with pets
  • Laughing with loved ones

5. Seek Support if Needed
Remember, mental health days are okay! If struggles persist or overwhelm you:

  • Reach out to a trusted friend or family member
  • Contact a mental health professional
  • Call a helpline (e.g., National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) 1-800-950-6264)
  • Use online resources (crisis text lines, support groups)

Remember, taking care of your mental health is essential. By prioritizing your well-being, you're investing in a happier, healthier you.
