What is sourdough and why is everyone making it?

Sourdough is a type of bread made from the natural fermentation of dough using wild yeast and bacteria. It’s called sourdough because of the slightly sour taste that develops during the fermentation process. The reason why it has gained so much popularity recently…

…is due to its unique flavor, texture, and health benefits.

Sourdough bread tends to have a chewy crust and a soft, airy interior, making it a favorite among bread enthusiasts. Additionally, many people are drawn to sourdough because it is easier to digest than traditional bread. The fermentation process breaks down gluten and phytic acid, making the nutrients in the bread more accessible to the body. Furthermore, sourdough has a lower glycemic index compared to other types of bread, which means it doesn’t lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.

5 health benefits of sourdough:

  1. Easier Digestion: The fermentation process in sourdough breaks down gluten and phytic acid, making it easier for many people to digest compared to bread made with commercial yeast.
  2. Nutrient Absorption: Sourdough fermentation helps to release more nutrients from the grains, making it easier for our bodies to absorb them.
  3. Gut Health: The live cultures in sourdough starter promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, which is essential for overall digestive and immune health.
  4. Blood Sugar Regulation: Sourdough bread has a lower glycemic index than other bread, which means it doesn’t cause spikes in blood sugar levels.
  5. Richer in Prebiotics: The fermentation process of sourdough increases the prebiotic content in the bread, providing fuel for the beneficial probiotic bacteria in our gut.

This combination of delicious taste and potential health benefits has led to a surge in home bakers experimenting with sourdough recipes and techniques. It’s not just a culinary trend; it’s a fascinating journey into the art and science of bread making. However, I have personally tried making sourdough several times and I don’t think the process is worth it. It takes way too long and it’s definitely not for everyone. So, if you are really interested in making it, prepare for the lengthy process. But I would highly recommend buying a sourdough starter or sourdough yeast to lessen the load. Otherwise, find a local bakery that makes it and just buy it. It’s totally worth the hefty price and save yourself the headache.
